🌿 Plant outdoors

September is the best month to plant garlic and to start establishing perennial fruit trees and shrubs for next year.

🥗
Spinach (autumn batch)

Direct sow

Sow spinach directly for autumn harvest. It germinates readily in September warmth and tolerates light frost. Harvest outer leaves continuously.

Plant garlic in September

September is the ideal month for planting winter garlic (ozimý česnek) in Czech Republic. Winter garlic develops roots before the ground freezes and then produces much larger, better-flavoured bulbs than spring-planted garlic. Harvest the following July.

Planting depth
5 cm deep, pointed end up
Spacing
15 cm between cloves, 25 cm between rows
Harvest
Following July when leaves yellow

🧺 Main September harvests

September brings the final summer harvests alongside the main fruit season. Harvest before the first frosts arrive.

🍅
Tomato (final harvest)

Harvest remaining tomatoes before frost. Bring green tomatoes indoors to ripen on a windowsill — they will colour in 1–2 weeks.

🍎
Apple (autumn varieties)

Main harvest of autumn apple varieties. Store in a cool place. Check stored apples weekly — one bad apple spreads rot to its neighbours.

🍇
Grape

Harvest ripe grape bunches. Taste before cutting — they should be fully sweet. Make juice, wine or eat fresh.

🟣
Plum (main harvest)

Main plum harvest — the best for traditional Czech povidla (plum butter). Process immediately or freeze for later cooking.

🍐
Pear (main harvest)

Harvest pears and let them ripen in a cool place. Picked direct from the tree they are still hard — ripen at room temperature.

🥔
Late potato

Dig late varieties now. Allow to dry on the surface for a few hours before storing in paper sacks in a cool, dark place.

🎃
Pumpkin

Harvest pumpkins before the first frost. Knock — a ripe pumpkin sounds hollow. Cure for 10 days in warmth for longer storage.

🌰
Walnut

Collect fallen walnuts as soon as they drop. Remove husks and dry in a warm airy place for 2–3 weeks before eating or storing.

Frequently asked questions

When should I plant garlic in Czech Republic?

Plant winter garlic (ozimý česnek) in September or early October in Czech Republic. This gives cloves time to establish roots before the ground freezes. Plant 5 cm deep, 15 cm apart, pointed end up. Winter-planted garlic produces larger, better-flavoured bulbs than spring-planted garlic and is harvested the following July.

Is autumn a good time to plant fruit trees?

Yes — autumn (September to November) is the ideal time to plant fruit trees and shrubs in Czech Republic. The soil is still warm from summer, which encourages good root establishment before winter. Bare-root trees are available from nurseries from November; container-grown plants can be planted from September.

How should I store apples for winter?

Store apples in a cool (2–4°C), dark, slightly humid place. Wrap each apple individually in newspaper if storing for months. Only store perfect, undamaged fruit. Pears should be harvested slightly under-ripe and stored in a cool place — check every few days as they ripen quickly once they start.

What vegetables can I harvest in September?

September brings a huge range of final harvests: tomatoes (bring green ones indoors to ripen), peppers, cucumbers, courgettes, beetroot, carrots, autumn kohlrabi, late potatoes, pumpkins, grapes, autumn apples, pears, plums and walnut. Herbs: final outdoor harvest of basil, parsley, mint, chives and rocket.
