How the sowing plan works
1. Pre-sowing
Warmth-loving crops (tomato, pepper, cucumber) are sown indoors from February to April so they get a head start.
2. Planting out
Frost-sensitive seedlings go outdoors only after the Ice Saints (after 15 May). Hardy crops can go earlier.
3. Harvest
For every crop you'll see when harvest comes and what to do until then β watering, feeding, pruning.
Common sowing mistakes
- βPlanting out too early. Tomatoes and peppers put outside before mid-May are often killed by late frost. Wait for the Ice Saints (12β15 May).
- βPre-sowing too early. Seedlings sown in January get leggy and overgrown on the windowsill. For tomatoes, March is early enough.
- βSowing too densely. Sow carrots and radishes thinly β overcrowded seedlings choke each other and won't form a proper root.
- βNo plan. Without an overview it's easy to forget to pre-sow in time. That's why a plan and reminders help.
Frequently asked questions
What does pre-sowing seedlings mean?
Pre-sowing means sowing seeds into a tray or pots indoors in the warmth (on a windowsill or in a cold frame) before the frosts end. When it warms up outside, you plant out ready seedlings. This is mainly done for tomato, pepper, cucumber, courgette and pumpkin.
When can seedlings go outdoors?
Warmth-loving crops are planted out only after the Ice Saints, i.e. usually after 15 May. Hardier crops like lettuce, radish, carrot, peas or onion tolerate sowing outdoors much earlier, from March and April.
Which crops are best for a complete beginner?
Quick and undemanding ones: radish, lettuce, carrot, courgette, beans, and among herbs basil and chives. They give a fast reward and forgive mistakes.
