🥒 When to Plant
Cucumbers
Cucumbers are the most cold-sensitive of all common vegetables. They go outside only after May 15. The simplest method is direct sowing outdoors — cucumber roots dislike transplanting.
Quick answer
- 🥒 Plant outdoors / direct sow after May 15 — minimum night temp 12°C, soil temp 15°C
- 🌱 If pre-growing: start only 3–4 weeks before planting (end of April to early May)
- 🪴 Sow into peat pots — plant the whole pot to avoid disturbing roots
- 💧 Cucumbers are 95% water — daily watering essential in summer
Cucumber quirk: short pre-growing window
Unlike tomatoes, cucumbers have a spongy root system that dislikes transplanting. Pre-grow for a maximum of 3–4 weeks and always transplant with the full root ball intact. For most gardeners, direct sowing after May 15 is the easier and better option.

🌿 Planting cucumbers in the garden
Conditions before planting
- ✓Minimum night temperature: 12°C
- ✓Soil temperature: at least 15°C
- ✓Sunny, warm, wind-sheltered position
- ✓Support structure ready — canes or net at least 1.5 m tall
Planting spacing
Direct sowing method (recommended)
After May 15, sow 2 seeds per station, 1–2 cm deep. Cover with fleece or film for 1–2 weeks to speed up germination and protect from cold nights. Once seedlings emerge, remove the weaker one and leave the strongest to grow.
🌇 Growing cucumbers on a balcony
Cucumbers thrive on a balcony — they climb the railing or a net and produce abundantly. The key is plenty of water (daily in summer) and a large container.
Recommended balcony varieties
- 🥒 La Diva (parthenocarpic)
- 🥒 Mini Star
- 🥒 Bush Champion
- 🥒 Spacemaster
- 🥒 Marketmore 76
Parthenocarpic = sets fruit without insect pollination (great for balconies)
Container requirements
- 🪴 Minimum 15–20 litres per plant
- 💧 Water daily in summer (cucumbers are 95% water)
- 🌞 South or south-west balcony, min. 6 hours sun
- 🔗 Attach to balcony railing or install a net
❌ Common cucumber planting mistakes
Pre-growing too long
More than 4 weeks produces oversized root systems that struggle badly after transplanting. Keep pre-growing to 3–4 weeks maximum.
Disturbing the root ball at transplanting
Cucumbers tolerate root disturbance very poorly. Always transplant with the full root ball intact — use peat pots planted whole.
No support structure
Cucumbers sprawling on the ground develop rot and disease where fruit contacts soil. A 1.5 m support = healthier plants and cleaner fruit.
Insufficient watering
Irregular watering causes bitter, deformed fruit. Water consistently — cucumbers need reliable moisture, especially in hot weather.
Leaving overripe fruits on the plant
Yellow, overripe cucumbers signal the plant to stop producing. Harvest regularly — even undersized fruits — to keep the plant in production mode.
Frequently asked questions
When should I plant cucumbers outside? ▼
After May 15. Cucumbers are the most frost-sensitive of all common vegetables — even a brief cold night will destroy the crop. Minimum night temperature must be 12°C and soil temperature at least 15°C.
When should I start cucumber seeds for pre-growing? ▼
End of April or early May — just 3–4 weeks before planting out. Earlier sowing (February–March) produces oversized seedlings that struggle badly after transplanting, as their root system is too developed.
Can I direct sow cucumbers outside without pre-growing? ▼
Yes — and for cucumbers, direct sowing is actually the recommended method. After May 15, sow 2 seeds per station, 1–2 cm deep. Cover with fleece for 1–2 weeks to accelerate germination. Germination takes about a week. Thin to the strongest seedling.
Do cucumbers need a climbing support? ▼
Yes. A support of at least 1.5 m (canes, trellis or net) is essential. Cucumbers grown on supports produce cleaner, healthier, straighter fruits and are far less prone to rotting compared to ground-level plants.
